"Let's put a pond here..."

The Brief:
A local business was setting up a new shop in a building that used to be a barbers. They had to take out a section of the floor that had contained a wash stand, only to find a big gap in the floorboards with just bare concrete on view. Rather than try to match up the floorboards, we suggested turning this into a feature!

Hidden depths:
We wanted to create a Lilly pond, so needed to get a sense of depth. Using acrylic paints normally used for scenery painting, we got to work building layer on layer...
Shoes off!
Because we were painting straight onto polished concrete, the image was very delicate until the final coat of varnish went on. We wanted to get some nice colour mixes too, so we were working quickly, keeping the painting wet all the time. So shoes were not allowed as they scratched the paint off!

Add the little fishes...
A quick splash of white emulsion to give the fish a chance of standing out against the blue...
Finally, a bit more colour, and a glaze... finished!
